The Zubbas are the black-and-yellow hornets guarding Gruntilda’s golden honey piece, a Jiggy, inside the large hive attached to the central tree in Click Clock Wood. Their yellow-orange faces, prominent blue eyes, antennae, translucent wings and pointed stingers distinguish them from the smaller insects associated with ordinary beehives. They speak collectively, recognize a honey bear as a threat and defend the prize as a group in Banjo-Kazooie. Their behavior changes with the seasons, however, and the first possible visit does not require a fight. In spring, Mumbo Jumbo can transform Banjo into a Bumblebee in his skull for twenty-five Mumbo Tokens. Fly to the hive and use its small opening, which the ordinary bear cannot enter in that season. The Zubbas accept the disguise as another bee and explain that they are guarding Grunty’s golden honey piece because they have been warned about a honey bear. Their warning concerns the visitor they have just failed to recognize. The Pink Jinjo can be collected inside the spring hive, but the disguise does not start the battle for the central Jiggy. That encounter belongs to summer. Return as Banjo and Kazooie, climb the tree’s paths and platforms to the hive, then land on its roof. Use Beak Buster on the top hatch to break through and drop into the honeycomb-lined chamber. The central prize is enclosed by a protective cover on a raised comb, so simply reaching it does not allow collection. Move off the entrance area and approach the middle as the ordinary bear to trigger the hornets’ recognition and challenge. They call Banjo the honey bear and order the other Zubbas to sting him. The spring Jinjo visit and summer Jiggy battle are separate objectives, and their entrances and transformation requirements should be planned accordingly.
The Summer Battle and Later Seasons
Ten Zubbas must be defeated to win the summer Jiggy. They emerge in successive appearances, with up to three active at once, then fly towards Banjo and Kazooie to strike with their stingers. Keep space around the central comb and watch for an incoming hornet before committing to an attack. Rat-a-tat Rap can strike an approaching Zubba in the air, while Wonderwing allows the pair to let attackers fly into its protection. Each contacting hornet is defeated without hurting Banjo while the move remains active. Bottles teaches Wonderwing inside Clanker’s Cavern, and its Golden Feather supply must last through the swarm; the bee disguise is not required for this battle. Defeating one attacker brings the encounter closer to completion, but the central prize remains protected until all ten are gone. Leaving before victory can produce a shorter warning when the bear returns. After the final defeat, the Zubbas admit that he has beaten them and remark that they were getting bored of guarding the prize anyway. The cover around the Jiggy disappears, allowing collection from the central comb. Once that Jiggy has been collected, returning does not start another normal battle for a duplicate reward. Autumn has a different encounter: a remaining Zubba announces that the others have moved out, and there is no summer battle or Jiggy to win there. Break the roof hatch in summer to open access to the corresponding autumn interior, where four Musical Notes can be collected. In winter, the hive is broken and deserted, with a Mumbo Token among its remains. The fighting swarm returns separately in Grunty’s Furnace Fun: defeat ten Zubbas within thirty seconds to clear its timed challenge. Wonderwing again removes the need to chase each incoming hornet. The nest also appears in Furnace Fun’s sound questions, where its music is associated with the answer identifying the hornet hive.
Zubbas in Banjo-Tooie
The Zubbas return in Banjo-Tooie in Cloud Cuckooland. Outside their nest, individual hornets fly around the floating terrain and ram approaching intruders, making their knockback especially dangerous near an exposed edge. Inside, a speaking Zubba welcomes the bee to the group’s new home and introduces a shooting game arranged to celebrate the move. Reaching that interior requires Humba Wumba’s Bumblebee transformation. Bring a Glowbo to her wigwam, enter the pool to change form and fly to the summit of the central mountain. A large Zubba effigy holds a target there. Hit its center with a stinger to begin the entrance challenge, then reach twenty hits in total within the ten-second sequence. Hold the rapid-fire stinger attack while facing the target; staying outside first-person aiming allows continuous fire. Ordinary eggs can make the Zubbas respond, but the required visitor is the stinging bee. Success opens the hexagonal doorway on the mountain’s exterior below the summit. Fly down to that opening to enter the hive, rather than searching for an entrance inside the Central Cavern. The host offers instructions before the game, which gives the bee sixty seconds to shoot colored Zubbas flying through the tall chamber. Red targets are worth one point each, green targets two and blue targets three. A score of at least forty wins the second prize, a Cheato Page, while fifty or more also qualifies for the first prize, a Jiggy. Both can be awarded after the same successful round, so winning the Page does not require a separate attempt before earning the Jiggy. Keep firing while flying and turning with the targets, prioritize blue and green hornets when several are visible, and follow the action upwards as targets move through the chamber. Rapid fire provides more opportunities to connect than isolated aimed shots, especially while adjusting height. When time expires, the host evaluates the score and announces the earned prizes. Collect them from the interior comb platforms before leaving. Further visits allow another game, but already earned collectibles are not awarded again. This contest uses the bee’s projectile attack and point scoring, unlike the original game’s summer fight against hornets charging the ordinary bear.
