Tiptup Jr. is the baby turtle hatched in Jolly Roger’s Lagoon during Banjo-Tooie. He is the first son of Tiptup, the turtle previously encountered conducting a choir in Banjo-Kazooie, and has nineteen older sisters. When Banjo and Kazooie find his father on a secluded beach, the egg still has not hatched despite being many weeks overdue. Kazooie can help once she has learned Hatch, but the newborn’s arrival creates another problem when he lands upside down on his shell. Righting him completes the rescue and allows father and son to leave together. The event provides a Jiggy and also supplies the physical joke behind the name Tiptup: the child has literally tipped up.
The Egg and the Newborn Turtle
Before hatching, Tiptup Jr. is enclosed in a small, pale pink egg resting on the sand beside his father. The shell breaks apart during Kazooie’s Hatch animation, revealing a much smaller green turtle with a rounded head, large eyes, a brown shell and a pale underside. His short limbs and low body make him recognizably similar to Tiptup, although he is only a hatchling. On emerging, he ends up with the shell against the ground and his feet in the air. He cannot right himself during that stage of the event, so simply waiting beside him does not finish the task. Once Kazooie flips him over, he can move across the beach and follow his father towards the water. The egg, overturned hatchling and walking child are successive stages of the same character’s encounter.
Reaching the Beach Through Mumbo’s Skull
Tiptup and his egg occupy a small beach separated from the main waterfront of Jolly Roger’s Lagoon. To reach them, enter Mumbo’s Skull in the village and inspect the damaged patch of wall on the ground floor. A Grenade Egg breaks that patch open and reveals the passage to the secluded shore. Grenade Eggs are taught by Jamjars in Pine Grove at a total of 110 Musical Notes, so this entrance can be opened before the duo have learned to hatch the egg. The area belongs to the lagoon’s coastal caves rather than the deep-water rooms of Atlantis. Kazooie’s separate Wing Whack teaching area is also associated with Turtle View Cave, but visiting a move hatch alone does not mean the hidden route through the skull has been opened. Follow that passage out to the sand and approach Tiptup to hear his request.
Tiptup’s Request and His Large Family
Tiptup identifies the egg as his baby and says it is about 32 weeks late. Kazooie suggests that he sit on it to hatch it himself, but he objects that he is a reptile rather than a bird. The conversation directs the player towards Kazooie’s ability without giving her the move immediately. Tiptup is particularly eager to discover that the baby is a boy because his other nineteen children are daughters. That makes Tiptup Jr. his twentieth child and first son, rather than an only child. The sisters do not gather on the beach during this scene, and the game does not identify them as the members of the earlier Tiptup Choir. Tiptup Jr.’s name and family relationship are established through his father’s conversation; the task does not introduce a mother or explain why the egg has taken so long to hatch.
Learning Hatch and Returning as Kazooie
The essential move is Hatch, taught to Kazooie alone by Jamjars in Terrydactyland at 420 Musical Notes. Split-Up is also required, learned behind Witchyworld’s Big Top at 160 Notes. To reach the Hatch lesson, enter Unga Bunga’s Cave in Terrydactyland and follow the right-hand ledge from the relic-room area into the adjoining passage. Use its Split-Up Pads, then take Kazooie along the green corridor to Jamjars. Once she has learned the move, return to Jolly Roger’s Lagoon. The central monument in the village conceals the local Split-Up Pads; blast it open with a Grenade Egg if necessary and separate there. Take Kazooie through Mumbo’s Skull and its opened wall passage to the beach. This return visit is why the egg can remain unresolved during an early exploration of the lagoon, before the dinosaur world has supplied the needed ability.
Hatching the Egg and Righting Tiptup Jr.
Position Kazooie on top of the egg and perform Hatch. On Nintendo 64, hold Z and press B to make her settle over it until the shell breaks. Attacking the unhatched egg is a different action: firing a Grenade Egg at it causes Tiptup to object to the attempt to blow up his child, and does not replace the Hatch requirement. After the baby appears, Tiptup immediately notices something wrong with his overturned position. Kazooie points out that he has tipped up, which Tiptup does not find funny. Use an attack to turn the hatchling onto his feet. Wing Whack is a convenient choice, performed with B while controlling Kazooie alone after learning it from Jamjars at Turtle View Cave for 265 Notes. Other attacks can also right him, so Wing Whack is not the sole solution to this second stage.
The Jiggy and Departure into the Water
Once Tiptup Jr. is standing correctly, his father thanks Kazooie and produces a Jiggy that he says he found buried in the sand. The reward follows both the hatching and the righting of the baby, rather than appearing as soon as the egg cracks. Tiptup then calls his son over and says he will take him to meet his sisters. The two turtles head off the beach into the water, leaving the golden piece for Kazooie to collect. They do not remain beside the empty shell as permanent residents after the completed event. Collect the Jiggy before returning through the passage to Mumbo’s Skull and reuniting with Banjo. The baby has no separate request to carry him elsewhere, and the departure is handled by the encounter itself rather than by Taxi Pack or another transport task.
Quiz Questions and Rare’s Swimming-Lesson Comment
Tiptup’s family encounter is remembered in Tower of Tragedy, where questions can ask what is wrong with his egg and how many daughters he has. The answers are that the egg will not hatch and that he has nineteen daughters; Tiptup Jr. is the son whose arrival resolves the first problem. Rare also revisited the departure in its Scribes letters column on 3 May 2001. In a humorous response attributed to the Banjo-Tooie team, it explained that Tiptup takes his son into the sea for swimming lessons, then tells him how his father keeps appearing in games unrelated to him. That is supplemental commentary about the pair’s exit, rather than an additional swimming lesson the player can follow or unlock. It connects the baby’s first outing with the recurring joke about Tiptup’s appearances across Rare’s games.
The Diddy Kong Racing DS Identity Question
Tiptup Jr. later became the subject of a reader’s question about Diddy Kong Racing DS. Writing to Scribes in 2007, the reader wondered whether the racer’s much higher voice meant that the younger turtle had taken his father’s place. Rare’s reply on 20 December quoted DS team member Gary, who jokingly blamed the voice on the performer’s tight jeans and then entertained the reader’s suggestion as another possibility. The answer does not provide a definite identification of the racer as Tiptup Jr. The DS character is still presented under the name Tiptup, so the joke should not be turned into a confirmed second appearance for his son. The directly established Tiptup Jr. encounter remains the egg-and-beach sequence in Banjo-Tooie. His father’s racing career and other cameos belong to Tiptup’s own history.
Versions and Dialogue
The baby turtle and his complete quest appear in the original Nintendo 64 Banjo-Tooie, the Xbox release available through Rare Replay, and the Nintendo 64 release on Nintendo Switch Online. He is therefore not an Xbox-exclusive Stop ’n’ Swop character, despite also being an egg that Kazooie can hatch. Tiptup’s son is part of Jolly Roger’s Lagoon’s Jiggy tasks, whereas Heggy’s Mystery Eggs supply separate unlocks in her shed. Use the move controls shown by the version being played; the Z-and-B instructions above describe Nintendo 64 controls. The dialogue that explains the delay, comments on the overturned child and awards the prize is spoken by Tiptup. The quotations below are short excerpts from the father’s lines during this encounter, rather than invented speech for the newborn.
