Alfred P. Cock

Alfred P. Cock banner placeholder

Alfred P. Cock is the blue peacock who runs the Mr. Drippy ice cream van in Spiller’s Harbor in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. Maggie Birds have driven away his customers and forced him to hide inside the vehicle, leaving Banjo and Kazooie to clear the area before he can serve them. His reward is a free ice cream cone, which becomes part of the task to reunite Mrs. Squitter with her two children. Alfred later appears among the spectators at Banjo-Pilot’s awards ceremony. His name combines his peacock species with a reference to Alfred Hitchcock, and Rare’s GBA team confirmed that the birds attacking his business were part of the same film joke.

The Peacock and His Game Appearances

Alfred is a peacock rather than a human shopkeeper, with blue colouring identifying the bird who serves the visitors. His business operates from the Mr. Drippy van, which becomes both his workplace and his refuge during the attack. When the danger has passed, he introduces himself and says that the birds have kept customers away all week. Clearing them allows the local business to resume serving visitors. Alfred returns in Banjo-Pilot as a background character at the awards ceremony following a successful Grand Prix. This places him among the supporting characters celebrating the podium finish rather than among the pilots competing on the courses. The cameo supplies a second game appearance, but it does not involve clearing Maggie Birds, buying ice cream or completing a new delivery task. Other Grunty’s Revenge characters, including Mama Clucker, also appear in the ceremony.

Finding Alfred and Defeating the Maggie Birds

Look for the ice cream van in the main Spiller’s Harbor area. The Maggie Birds flying around it are the immediate obstacle to meeting Alfred properly. Bring Kazooie and use her Rat-a-tat Rap to deal with them. Bozzeye teaches this move in Bad Magic Bayou once the duo have collected 210 Musical Notes, so players who passed the lesson should return there before attempting the encounter. Kazooie is rescued earlier in Breegull Beach, making this a task for the reunited bear and bird. The required attack comes from that earlier lesson rather than from buying anything at the van or completing the harbour’s lighthouse battle. Maggie Birds swoop towards the duo when approached. The useful opening comes when a bird moves close enough to the ground for Kazooie’s beak to reach it. On Game Boy Advance, jump with A and press B in midair to perform the Rat-a-tat Rap, timing the pecking attack to meet the bird. A successful hit defeats one Maggie Bird; continue until every member of the group around the van has been removed. The Jinjo Oracle’s hint describes this as winning a battle of the beaks when the birds are nearer the ground. Following their descent gives a clearer target than repeatedly attacking while they are out of range. Once the group is gone, speak to Alfred to receive his thanks and be served.

The Mr. Drippy Cone and the Family Reunion

Alfred gives Banjo and Kazooie a Mr. Drippy Cone, including a free squirt of raspberry juice. The cone is the immediate reward for helping him and an item to deliver to somebody else. It is not the Jiggy awarded at the end of the wider family-reunion task. Alfred’s grateful service also contrasts with the situation before the attack is stopped, when he has been unable to attract customers at all. Take the cone to the hungry Squit waiting on a boat south of the van. Giving the child the requested ice cream persuades him to return to his mother, completing the first part of Mrs. Squitter’s request. The second child is in Spillerston, a little west of the N. Kreditz Arcade. A Maggie Bird has taken his favourite toy spaceship and left it on the arcade’s roof, where he cannot retrieve it himself. Collect that toy and return it to the waiting Squit so he can also go back to Mrs. Squitter. Once both children have returned, their mother supplies the Jiggy for the reunion. Alfred’s contribution is therefore essential but indirect: his cone resolves the hungry child’s refusal to leave, while recovering the spaceship resolves the other child’s problem. Taking the cone alone does not complete both requests, and Alfred does not hand over an additional Jiggy for the same encounter.

The Hitchcock and Peacock Wordplay

The spoken sound of P. Cock forms the word peacock, matching Alfred’s species. His first name and the birds harassing him also refer to filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and The Birds. This connection was confirmed by Rare’s GBA team in the Scribes column dated 24 December 2003, after a reader asked whether the Mr. Drippy scene was an intentional reference. The reply establishes the film connection rather than leaving it as a similarity inferred by fans. The van’s Mr. Drippy name also echoes the Mr. Whippy ice cream name. These jokes link Alfred’s identity, occupation and predicament: a bird selling ice cream has his business ruined by other birds until the visitors intervene.
