The Squits are the two children of Mrs. Squitter encountered during the family’s visit to Spiller’s Harbor in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. Their mother wants to return to the sea, but neither child is ready to leave without the thing they want. One waits on a boat for ice cream from the Mr. Drippy van; the other is upset because a Maggie Bird has taken a toy spaceship and left it beyond reach. Banjo and Kazooie help each youngster separately, bringing both back to their mother for a single Jiggy reward. The pair have different styles of childlike speech and their own responses before and after receiving the items. A Squit also makes a later background appearance in Banjo-Pilot.
Appearance and the Two Voices
Both children have small brown bodies formed into a piled shape, large pale eyes and short appendages around their bases. Their conversation portraits show the same distinctive design used by their mother, whose role is established separately through her introduction and request for help. Although the youngsters share an appearance, their dialogue gives each encounter a different voice. The child missing the spaceship uses w sounds in words such as bwig and spwaceship, while the hungry child uses th sounds in words such as ithecream and thankth. These spellings are part of the written character dialogue and are retained in the quotations below. Their individual names are not supplied in these conversations, so the requests and locations provide the clearest way to distinguish the two.
The Family’s Outing to Spiller’s Harbor
The family are visiting Spiller’s Harbor for a seaside outing. Mrs. Squitter waits beside the houses in Spillerston, below the stairs leading to Mr. Ripovski’s waterslide counter, and explains that the children will not come home without their treats. She is crying when Banjo asks what is wrong, and later urges him to hurry because they have a tube to catch. The children’s own accounts explain what is delaying them: one wants something to eat, while the other cannot recover a newly obtained toy. The task therefore involves two conversations and two item deliveries around the town and harbour. The mother supplies the final reward once the youngsters have returned, while their separate requests give the player the practical steps needed to reunite the family.
The Hungry Squit on the Boat
The hungry child is aboard a boat in the main harbour, south of the Mr. Drippy ice cream van and near a smaller wooden dinghy in the polluted water. He begins by asking whether Banjo likes birds, then asks for help getting ice cream from the van. His promise is straightforward: once he has the treat, he can return to his mother. If left waiting, he threatens to scream unless he receives it, turning his unusual pronunciation into another joke in the exchange. The nearby polluted water is dangerous to ordinary Banjo, so approach using the harbour’s safe surfaces and boats. The boat conversation can be reached in the normal bear-and-bird form; the Octopus is useful for exploring the wider water but is not a condition of the child’s request.
Getting and Delivering the Mr. Drippy Cone
The ice cream comes from Alfred P. Cock, whose business has been disrupted by Maggie Birds. To help him, bring Kazooie’s Rat-a-tat Rap, taught by Bozzeye in Bad Magic Bayou once the duo have 210 Musical Notes. Jump with A and press B in the air to peck the birds when they swoop close enough to the ground, continuing until the group around the van has been defeated. Speak to Alfred afterwards and he supplies a Mr. Drippy Cone, including raspberry juice. Take it back to the child on the boat and talk to him to make the delivery. He thanks the visitors, says he will tell his mother how kind they were and promises a hug when they meet again. The cone resolves his request and allows him to go home; Alfred’s gift is the item for this delivery, while Mrs. Squitter provides the family’s Jiggy after both children have been helped.
The Squit with the Missing Spaceship
The other child waits a little west of the N. Kreditz Arcade in Spillerston. He had told his mother he would come straight back after getting a toy spaceship from the machine, but a Maggie Bird took it and placed it where he could not reach. His initial complaint is therefore about getting into trouble as well as losing the toy. Find the arcade to his east, clear the Whiplashes nearby and use Flap Flip to jump onto its roof. Kazooie teaches the move after her rescue in Breegull Beach without requiring Musical Notes; hold L and press A to perform it. Collect the spaceship and return to the waiting child to hand it over. He thanks the duo and says he cannot wait to show his mother. Recovering the roof item does not require playing an arcade minigame or spending the gold coins used to unlock those games later.
Bringing Both Children Home
Each child’s problem is solved by the matching item: ice cream for the boat encounter and the spaceship for the Spillerston encounter. After both deliveries, return to Mrs. Squitter near the houses below the waterslide counter. She confirms that the family are ready to go, thanks the duo with a trinket and leaves a Jiggy for them to collect as she departs towards the harbour. Kazooie follows with a joke about the cleanliness of the reward, referring to the creatures’ design. There is one Jiggy for completing the reunion, rather than a separate Jiggy handed over by each child. The youngsters’ grateful reactions and the mother’s farewell close the task, changing the family from reluctant visitors into a group ready to leave together.
What the Squits Are and Where Their Name Comes From
Rare’s GBA team answered a question about the Squits in the Scribes column dated 24 December 2003, explaining that the creatures represent poo. Their brown piled design and the dialogue’s toilet humour fit that explanation. The name also echoes the British slang expression the squits, meaning diarrhoea; the related form the squitters is recorded too, making the mother’s surname part of the same wordplay. The developers mentioned an earlier name, Sloppy Squitter, for the mother, but their additional comment that she did not reach the final game is unclear beside the released Mrs. Squitter encounter. It does not establish that the children’s mother is absent. Their family and humour are supported more directly than speculative identification as real octopuses or a connection with the spider Squitter from Donkey Kong Country 2.
A Squit at the Banjo-Pilot Awards Ceremony
A Squit appears among the supporting characters at the awards ceremony in Banjo-Pilot. The spectator cameo brings the creatures back alongside other characters carried over from Grunty’s Revenge, such as Alfred P. Cock and Mr. Ripovski. References identify this appearance in the singular, so it does not establish that both siblings attend or reveal which child the spectator represents. The Squit is part of the celebration around the racers, outside the playable pilot roster. No ice cream delivery, missing spaceship request or further family-reunion mission accompanies the appearance, leaving the Spiller’s Harbor conversations as the pair’s main speaking roles.
