Goggles

Goggles banner placeholder

Goggles is the daughter of Bottles and Mrs. Bottles in Banjo-Tooie, and the sister of Speccy. She lives in the family’s underground house in Jinjo Village, where Banjo and Kazooie can meet her near the beginning of the adventure. Goggles offers them the Amaze-O-Gaze Glasses, a prototype developed by her father that adds zoom to Banjo’s first-person view. Her conversation presents the gift as a favour to her dad’s friends, even though the visitors are concealing the news of his death. Her distinctive eyewear, doll and bedroom poster also make her part of the house’s collection of character references. She later joins the reunited family, while her image appears again in Grabbed by the Ghoulies.

Appearance and Family

Goggles has a small blond tuft of hair, large green eyes and oversized blue goggles that dominate her face. She wears a red and dark striped outfit with bright yellow shoes, and usually holds an ape doll in one hand. Her pale muzzle and pointed dark nose resemble the other moles in Bottles’ family. The goggles provide both a distinguishing feature and a name that continues the household’s association with spectacles and other eyewear. Her brother Speccy wears a cap and carries a plane, making the children easy to tell apart even before their dialogue portraits appear. Jamjars is their uncle through his relationship to Bottles. A poster of Juno from Jet Force Gemini hangs in her room, paired with the Vela poster in her brother’s bedroom.

Finding Goggles and Receiving the Prototype

After reaching Jinjo Village from Spiral Mountain, enter the signed opening to Bottles’ House opposite the approach to King Jingaling’s palace. From the main living area, follow the hallway and take the left branch to Goggles’ room. The right branch leads to Speccy and the passage that Jingaling opens towards Wooded Hollow. Goggles greets Banjo and offers the prototype glasses because he and her father are good friends. Banjo asks whether Bottles finished working on them, and she confirms that he did before naming the invention. Receiving them requires talking to her, with no fee or Note total attached. The visit fits naturally into the first journey through the house, before the duo begin opening worlds at Jiggywiggy’s Temple. Goggles’ brother supplies information about the exit, while her own contribution is the optional viewing upgrade.

Using the Amaze-O-Gaze Glasses

The glasses let the player zoom in and out while looking through Banjo’s eyes. On Nintendo 64, press C-Up to enter that view, then use C-Left and C-Right to change the zoom. Goggles explains the controls during the gift conversation, so the improvement can be tried immediately in the house. It is useful for examining distant scenery and targets without moving the bear closer. Aiming and firing eggs in first person is a separate ability, Egg Aim, taught by Jamjars in Mayahem Temple for 25 Musical Notes; once learned, that mode supplies the reticle and uses Z to fire on the original controller. Goggles’ glasses improve the view rather than replacing the lesson. On Xbox or a remapped controller, use the zoom controls displayed by the game for that version.

Returning to Talk About the Glasses

Speaking to Goggles again produces a follow-up conversation about how the Amaze-O-Gaze Glasses are working. She trusts that her dad will be able to fix them if anything is wrong, creating another awkward moment for the visitors. Kazooie’s response prompts Goggles to ask why her father needs fixing. Banjo quickly intervenes with an innocent explanation, and the child accepts the reassurance, having feared that something much worse might have happened to him. The exchange continues the family’s uneasy ignorance of Bottles’ death during Gruntilda’s attack on Spiral Mountain. It also shows Goggles treating her father as the person responsible for maintaining his invention. Her offer does not begin a repair quest: the zoom function is already available once the first conversation has supplied it.

Collecting the Glasses Before the House Closes

The Amaze-O-Gaze upgrade is optional, but a player who wants it should collect it before completing Tower of Tragedy. After the quiz and the following restoration scenes, normal access to Bottles’ House closes, preventing another ordinary visit to Goggles’ bedroom. An uncollected pair of glasses can therefore be missed on that save file. Taking them during the first trip through Jinjo Village avoids the problem and leaves the zoom function available for the rest of the adventure. The closure does not remove an upgrade already obtained. It affects access to the family home rather than demanding an additional collectible, transformation or later payment. Goggles’ short early conversation is consequently worth completing even for a player who mainly intends to follow the path straight towards Wooded Hollow.

The Donkey Kong Doll and the Xbox Change

In the original Nintendo 64 game, Goggles plays with a Donkey Kong doll, holding the familiar ape beside her while she talks. The toy and her Juno poster place two other Rare-developed adventures inside the bedroom. The Xbox version changes the doll’s facial texture, replacing Donkey Kong’s characteristic brow with conspicuous rounded eyes and giving the ape a more generic appearance. The Nintendo 64 version on Nintendo Switch Online retains the original Donkey Kong presentation, which is visible during the same gift conversation. The change concerns the toy rather than Goggles’ identity or the effect of her glasses.

Goggles in the Tower of Tragedy Quiz

One of Gruntilda’s Tower of Tragedy questions asks which offered name belongs to Bottles’ child. Goggles is correct, while Tizers and Biggles are the distractors. Another question from the Nintendo 64 adventure asks what kind of doll Bottles’ daughter is playing with in Jinjo Village: the answer is Donkey Kong, rather than Banjo or Joanna Dark. That wording identifies the doll’s owner as the daughter and ties the question directly to Goggles’ bedroom animation. The household’s other child has a corresponding question about his toy plane. These details reward observing the rooms as well as following the dialogue. The doll question should be understood in its original Nintendo 64 context, since the Xbox toy has the altered face described above.

The Family Reunion and Her Ghoulies Portrait

Goggles is present with Speccy when Bottles returns home after the reversal of B.O.B. restores his life force. Their mother serves his burnt dinner, and the arrival of King Jingaling and Klungo leads to plans for a celebration. The reunion occurs after the quiz but before the final HAG 1 battle. Goggles is also represented by a portrait in Grabbed by the Ghoulies. In Dunfiddlin Cottage, look behind the old rotary telephone for the group containing Mrs. Bottles, Speccy, Goggles and Jolly Roger. Her picture occupies the lower-right position, directly beneath her brother. This later appearance is a framed cameo in Fiddlesworth’s home, while her conversation and the Amaze-O-Gaze gift belong to Banjo-Tooie.

Rare’s Later Family Reference

A question in Rare’s Scribes column dated 9 May 2008 asked whether Bottles’ wife and children would return in the next game. The reply jokingly explained their absence by saying that the family had left him following the trauma of his death and resurrection. This account comes from pre-release correspondence before Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, rather than a departure shown in Goggles’ bedroom or at the family reunion. Her established role remains the child who shares her father’s prototype with his friends. That encounter is retained in Banjo-Tooie’s Xbox release and its Rare Replay availability, as well as the original Nintendo 64 adventure presented on Nintendo Switch Online, with the doll’s appearance providing the notable visual difference between versions.
