Mrs. Bottles

Mrs. Bottles banner placeholder

Mrs. Bottles is a mole who lives in Jinjo Village with her husband Bottles and their two children, Speccy and Goggles. She first appears in Banjo-Tooie, waiting at home for her husband to return from his evening at Banjo’s house in Spiral Mountain. Banjo and Kazooie already know that Gruntilda has killed him, but Banjo prevents his partner from breaking the news to his wife. That uncomfortable visit gives the household a place in the adventure long before Bottles can be revived. Mrs. Bottles later welcomes him home, hosts a celebration with King Jingaling and Klungo, and becomes the subject of one of Gruntilda’s quiz questions. References to her also appear outside the Banjo games, most visibly through tea packaging and a family portrait in Grabbed by the Ghoulies.

Appearance and Family

Mrs. Bottles has brown hair set in purple curlers, pink glasses, a dark pointed nose and a pale muzzle. Her green clothing is covered at the front by a yellow apron decorated with flowers. During her first conversation with the duo, she repeatedly takes small sips from a large red mug bearing the letters BT. These details give her a very different appearance from Bottles’ orange clothes and thick round glasses, while keeping the same broad mole features. She carries a rolling pin during the later dinner scene. Speccy and Goggles each have a bedroom in the family home, and Bottles’ brother Jamjars is their uncle. Her husband’s work and the children’s enthusiasm for him are a recurring subject of conversation throughout the house.

Finding Bottles’ House

Bottles’ House is built underground in Jinjo Village, with its signposted entrance below the approach to King Jingaling’s palace. Banjo and Kazooie reach the village near the beginning of Banjo-Tooie, after leaving Spiral Mountain through the passage guarded by Klungo. Inside the house, the family’s rooms connect the entrance side with a back exit towards Wooded Hollow. King Jingaling opens that exit after giving the duo their first Jiggy, allowing them to continue towards Jiggywiggy’s Temple. Mrs. Bottles is encountered in the household’s main living area along this early route. Her conversation introduces the family’s situation, while the king’s assistance is what enables the journey through the house to continue. The different rooms can be explored during the same visit to meet both children.

Waiting for Her Husband

Mrs. Bottles greets Banjo warmly and asks how he is, prompting a friendly reply from the bear. Kazooie immediately wants to discuss Bottles’ ghost, but Banjo tells her to keep quiet. Mrs. Bottles notices the interruption and asks whether her husband is all right. She expects him back from Spiral Mountain for dinner and explains that he never misses the meal. Banjo reassures her that he will return soon, leaving her unaware of what happened during Gruntilda’s attack. The scene depends on the player knowing more than she does: Bottles’ death has already been shown, and his ghost remains outside Banjo’s ruined home. Her concern centres on an ordinary evening meal while the visitors are beginning a much larger rescue mission.

Speccy, Goggles and the Family Home

The children provide a fuller picture of the household while their mother waits for Bottles. Goggles has access to the Amaze-O-Gaze Glasses, a prototype her father has been working on, and offers them to Banjo and Kazooie. The glasses add a zoom function to the first-person view. Speccy is proud of his father and discusses the passage at the back of the house, which becomes the way forward after the audience with King Jingaling. Their rooms make the visit more than a single conversation at the entrance: the duo encounter Bottles’ family, one of his inventions and the route into the wider Isle o’ Hags in the same home. Mrs. Bottles herself remains concerned with her husband’s return rather than supplying the glasses or teaching the new combat abilities that Jamjars provides elsewhere.

Bottles Returns for Dinner

Bottles can finally return after Banjo and Kazooie win Tower of Tragedy and reach the B.O.B. controls in Cauldron Keep. They reverse the machine’s operation to restore the life force it has taken, reviving King Jingaling and then Bottles. The newly restored mole quickly realises how late he is for dinner and hurries home. Mrs. Bottles has already prepared the food, which has become burnt during his absence. With a rolling pin in hand, she expects him to eat it rather than excusing the delay. Bottles tries to explain that he has been dead, but her politely sceptical response shows that the extraordinary truth has not persuaded her. Speccy and Goggles are present as their father sits down to the overdue meal. This reunion takes place before the final battle against Gruntilda in HAG 1.

The Party at Bottles’ House

The dinner is interrupted by the arrival of King Jingaling and Klungo. Mrs. Bottles asks who the visitors are, and their conversation credits Banjo and Kazooie with rescuing the king and helping Klungo leave Gruntilda’s service. They decide that a celebration is in order, with Mrs. Bottles enthusiastically offering to make scones. Bottles asks where Banjo is because the bear deserves to be there as the hero. The others expect the duo to join them later, but the adventure is still continuing at Cauldron Keep. The party is therefore arranged while Banjo and Kazooie are pursuing Gruntilda, rather than beginning only after her final defeat. In a later conversation at his palace, Jingaling praises Mrs. B’s cooking and singles out the scones, confirming that her contribution to the celebration went down considerably better than Bottles’ burnt dinner.

Her First Name in Tower of Tragedy

Gruntilda’s Tower of Tragedy Quiz can ask the player for Mrs. Bottles’ first name. The correct answer is that it was never mentioned. Betty and Milky are the alternatives supplied to distract the contestants, rather than names revealed during the family’s conversations. Her title and relationship to Bottles are enough to identify her throughout the story, and Banjo also uses the familiar abbreviation Mrs. B. The question rewards paying attention to what the dialogue actually establishes, since visiting the house does not uncover an additional personal name. Like the other questions drawn from the adventure, it can appear as part of the quiz’s selection rather than as a separate request from Mrs. Bottles herself. Winning that competition is also what leads towards the machine that brings her husband home.

Tea Boxes and Portraits in Grabbed by the Ghoulies

Mrs. Bottles is referenced in Grabbed by the Ghoulies through boxes labelled Mrs. Bottles Tea. In the Pantry visited during Chapter 2, Scene 26, two boxes can be found on the shelving near the RW Cookie Flour. Another discarded box is beside the kitchen bins in Dunfiddlin Cottage, Fiddlesworth’s home. The cottage also contains her portrait, displayed near the old telephone alongside pictures of Speccy, Goggles and Jolly Roger. A further tea box appears on a shelf in the Servants’ Dormitory, among the mansion’s other familiar food brands. These details carry both her family connection and the tea-drinking habit from Banjo-Tooie into Ghoulhaven Hall. They are environmental cameos encountered while exploring Cooper’s adventure, with her image and name appearing on household objects rather than through a new conversation with the mole herself.

Rare’s Later Explanation and Game Versions

A reader asked about Bottles’ wife and children returning in the next Banjo game in Rare’s Scribes column dated 9 May 2008. The humorous reply said that the family had left Bottles after the trauma of his death and resurrection, leaving him drinking with Blackeye at Jolly Roger’s Inn. This account belongs to the pre-release letters column leading up to Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts; it is not a family separation shown during Banjo-Tooie or a conversation verified in the released sequel. Mrs. Bottles’ main story appearance remains her household role in Banjo-Tooie. The house visit, reunion and celebration are retained in the Xbox version available through Rare Replay, while Nintendo Switch Online presents the Nintendo 64 adventure. Those releases let players meet the same family and follow Bottles’ return through the original sequence of events.
