Speccy

Speccy banner placeholder

Speccy is a young mole and the son of Bottles and Mrs. Bottles in Banjo-Tooie. He lives in their underground house in Jinjo Village with his parents and sister Goggles. Banjo and Kazooie find him playing with a toy aeroplane in the bedroom containing the passage to Wooded Hollow. Speccy is proud of his father and looks forward to joining him in a kickball tournament, unaware that Gruntilda has killed him during the attack on Banjo’s home. His conversations combine enthusiasm for that future match with useful information about the way out of the village. He later appears with his reunited family, and his plane and bedroom decorations give him connections to the game’s quiz and Rare’s other characters.

Appearance and Family

Speccy wears large yellow-framed glasses and a pale baseball cap with a dark peak and a zigzag emblem on the front. His dark top and orange lower clothing distinguish him from Goggles’ striped outfit and blue goggles. He carries a green toy aeroplane, moving it around as though flying it while playing in his room. Coloured roundels decorate its wings. His broad muzzle, pointed nose and rounded body share the mole features of the rest of the household. Bottles’ brother Jamjars is his uncle, while Goggles occupies the bedroom across the hall. A poster of Vela, one of the protagonists of Rare’s Jet Force Gemini, hangs in Speccy’s room, adding another game reference to the family home.

His Bedroom and the Secret Passage

Enter Bottles’ House through the signed opening in Jinjo Village, across from the approach to King Jingaling’s palace. From the main living area, follow the hallway to the children’s rooms and take the right-hand branch to find Speccy. His bedroom has a tunnel leading to Wooded Hollow, the region containing Jiggywiggy’s Temple and the entrance to Mayahem Temple. King Jingaling opens that route after the first royal audience and gives Banjo and Kazooie the Jiggy needed to begin Jiggywiggy’s challenges. Speccy calls the tunnel his secret way out of the village and suggests that the visitors might find it useful. Kazooie replies that they already know about it because the king opened it for them. Speaking to the child provides the exchange, while visiting the king supplies the actual passage-opening event.

Looking Forward to the Kickball Tournament

Speccy says that he and his father are due to play in a kickball tournament the following week at the Mayan Stadium. According to his account, King Jingaling arranged it especially for Bottles because he is such a good player. Banjo cautiously asks whether the team has any substitutes, knowing why Bottles might be unable to attend. Speccy does not share that concern and insists that his dad is the best player on the team. The conversation links the family to Jingaling’s interest in getting the Jinjos home for their sporting activities. It also mentions the kickball setting that Banjo and Kazooie can explore in Mayahem Temple. Speccy’s planned outing with his father is described in dialogue; the player’s own tournament there is a separate challenge entered using Humba Wumba’s Stony transformation.

The Question About His Father

A further conversation gives Kazooie another opportunity to approach the subject of Bottles’ death. She asks how Speccy would feel if his dad had been fatally struck by an evil witch’s spell. Speccy does not understand the hypothetical question and asks what she means. Banjo interrupts before the bird can explain further, continuing his effort to keep the news from the family. This exchange follows the same uncomfortable situation established by the first visit to Mrs. Bottles: the visitors know what happened in Spiral Mountain, while the household expects him to return. Speccy’s confidence in his father’s kickball appearance makes the attempted disclosure particularly pointed. His response leaves him waiting at home rather than setting off on a search or asking the duo to perform a new task.

Bottles’ Return and the Family Celebration

The family is reunited after Banjo and Kazooie win Tower of Tragedy and reverse B.O.B.’s operation at Cauldron Keep. Restoring the stolen life force revives King Jingaling and Bottles, who hurries home because he is late for dinner. Speccy and Goggles are present while Mrs. Bottles serves their father the meal that has burnt during his absence. Bottles tries to explain his extraordinary delay, but his wife is unconvinced. The arrival of Jingaling and Klungo then turns the evening towards a celebration of Banjo and Kazooie’s achievements. This happens before the final HAG 1 battle, while the heroes are still pursuing Gruntilda. The scene brings Speccy’s father back into the household, although it does not go on to show the father-and-son kickball match he had been anticipating.

The Toy Plane in Gruntilda’s Quiz

Speccy’s toy is also the answer to a Tower of Tragedy question about what Bottles’ son is playing with in Jinjo Village. The correct choice is a plane, with a Game Boy and a tiger offered as the alternatives. Players can identify it directly from his bedroom animation, which repeatedly shows him carrying and manoeuvring the green model. The question refers to Speccy through his relationship to Bottles rather than requiring the contestant to remember his own name. It belongs to the same group of household details that includes Goggles’ identity and the doll she holds. Watching the children during the early visit therefore supplies information that can become useful much later, when Gruntilda tests the player’s knowledge of the adventure.

Later Appearances and References

Speccy reappears as a framed portrait in Grabbed by the Ghoulies. It hangs in Dunfiddlin Cottage, Fiddlesworth’s home, in the group of pictures behind the old rotary telephone. Speccy occupies the upper-right position, with Goggles directly beneath him, Mrs. Bottles to the left and Jolly Roger completing the lower row. The picture uses his recognisable cap-and-glasses appearance. This is an environmental cameo found while exploring the cottage during Cooper’s adventure, rather than another conversation with the young mole. Rare’s Scribes column of 9 May 2008 answered a reader’s question about the family returning in the next Banjo game. Its humorous reply said that Bottles’ wife and children had left him after the trauma of his death and resurrection. This is pre-release correspondence leading up to Nuts & Bolts, rather than a separation depicted in Speccy’s Banjo-Tooie scenes. His bedroom conversations and family reunion remain part of the original Nintendo 64 Banjo-Tooie, the Xbox release available through Rare Replay and the Nintendo 64 presentation on Nintendo Switch Online. These versions retain the same young mole, plane, passage and planned sporting outing.
